Daniel McFarlane, Isabella Forbes, & son Douglas McFarlane

Daniel4 MCFARLANE (John4, DANIEL3, ROBERT2, JOHN1) was born on 4 August 1874 in Barfon, Drymen, Stirlingshire, Scotland1, and died in March, 1927 in Philadephia, Pennsylvania2. He married ISABELLA FORBES June 08, 1894 in Helensburgh, Parish of Row, County Dunbarton, Scotland3. Isabella, the daughter of JOHN FORBES and JANET FORBES, was born July 23, 1873 in Fordyce, Banff, Scotland4, and died November 1937 in Princeton, New Jersey5. She is buried next to Daniel in Greenmont Cemetery in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

Balfron, the small village in which Daniel McFarlane was born, is in the Dryment district of Stirlingshire. The name means "Village of Mourning," and the local story is that the name came from an ancient time in which wolves attacked the village and stole many of the children. Historians think that the "wolves" from the story were probably actually Viking raiders who sacked the area when they raided Stirling in the year 1263. Such raiders were known to steal children from the towns and villages that they raided.

Daniel McFarlane began his working life as a carter - no doubt working with his father - and he was still in that trade at the time of his marriage in 1894. By 1899, however, he had become a police constable, and he remained a policeman for many years, though his position did change. When his son, Daniel Forbes Macfarlane married in 1920, his marriage license reported his father's occupation as Shipyard Detective.

Fordyce, where Isabella Forbes' birth was recorded is a small village about three miles from the town of Cullen, where the rest of this Forbes family's births were recorded and where the family was living in 1881. This picture depicts the village as it was during the time when Isabella's grandmother was born there. In modern times, Fordyce has become a picture postcard village.

Isabelle's father was a butcher in Cullen, and if not well to do, at least prosperous. Both of Isabella's parents died in 1889, when she was 16 years old. When she married, five years later, her marriage license gave her address as 30 John Street, Helensburgh, in Dunbartonshire. Her occupation was listed as Domestic Servant. We don't know exactly when or why she moved from the Cullen area to Cardross, Dunbartonshire, but it seems likely that she accompanied her brother, Peter Forbes. He appears in her wedding photos and was listed as living in Edinburough in later records.
